From the collection Other Finnish works for violin - Works for violin and piano by Finnish women composers 1886-1936 (printed book available: 9790550117198).
Agnes Tschetschulin (1859–1942) is one of the great violin virtuosos in the history of Finnish music. She was also a composer, and thanks to the popularity of her works for violin she was one of the internationally most frequently performed Finnish
composers of the 19th century.
Alla Zingaresca (1890) is Agnes Tschetschulin's best-known violin work. It can be found in several collections and violin repertoire lists in Europe and in the USA. It is a character piece in the salon style of the fin de siècle, more specifically the ‘Hungarian style' also employed in Puszta Film. It is characterised by colourful virtuoso effects, plenty of rubato and what is known as the ‘Oriental minor' scale. The work is cast in three sections, the tempo
increasing with each transition. The melodies are catchy and underpinned with a sensual pulsation.
