Juhani Nuorvala, described as an “electro-acoustic urban minimalist”, seeks inspiration from widely varied sources. With the enthusiasm of an explorer, he has delved into microtonality, French spectral music, techno and rock. It all becomes organically fused into his own idiom, often characterised by a frenzied rhythmic drive. Boost (2009) for violoncello and analogue synthesizer celebrates all these features. A foreword and exercise guide by cellist Juho Laitinen are provided alongside with the playing score for adapting the 16-note scale of Boost. “A cellist never plays just one tone; on each bow stroke a rainbow of resonance is brought to life.”

Elektroakustiseksi urbaaniksi minimalistiksi kuvailtu Juhani Nuorvala saa innoituksensa monista lähteistä. Mikrotonaalisuus on suuressa roolissa vuonna 2009 sävelletyssä teoksessa Boost sellolle ja analogiselle syntetisaattorille. Soittopartituurin liitteenä on sellisti Juho Laitisen kirjoittama esipuhe ja harjoitteluopas Boostin 16-sävelisen asteikon omaksumiseksi. ”Sellisti ei koskaan soita vain yhtä ääntä; jokaisella jousenvedolla hän tulee synnyttäneeksi kokonaisen sateenkaarellisen resonanssia.”
