Completed in 1959, these exquisitely lyrical settings of poems by Rilke form a sister work to Rautavaara's earlier Rilke opus, the Five Sonnets to Orpheus. Rautavaara describes the style as 'expressive dodecaphony', although the work owes as much to the late romantic song tradition of Mahler and R. Strauss as it does to modern serialism.
