Greta Dahlström (1887-1978) was a Finnish composer, choir conductor and music teacher. She extensively worked on composing Finnish folk music and collected folk songs for the Swedish Literature Society. Folkvisa från Houtskär (Swedish for Folksong from Houtskari, an island in the south-west coast of Finland) is beautifully arranged for string orchestra and evokes fateful athmosphere with the dorian mode. Dahlström won a competition contest organized by Finnish-Swedish cultural society Brage in 1936. The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra performed Folkvisa many time in 1930-1950's.
This publication includes a score and string parts (33221), and it's part of HUOM project.
The field of art and music is constantly re-evaluating its heritage. Whose histories and voices should be heard in concerts, what kind of music should be played and what does it have to say? What kind of stories are conveyed through music and what has been left unheard?
These themes are in the heart of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra's new project: HUOM - History's Unheard Orchestral Music. The planning for the project is based on the projects “Music Re-searchers in Society” and “Daughters of Music” by the societal and action-oriented music research association Suoni ry, the University of Helsinki and the University of the Arts Helsinki. In collaboration with an extensive network of partners, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra will search for and perform orchestral works that have been overlooked in the music history of our nation.
