Agnes Tschetschulin (1859–1942) is one of the great violin virtuosos in the history of Finnish music. She was also a composer, and thanks to the popularity of her works for violin she was one of the internationally most frequently performed Finnish
composers of the 19th century.
Puszta Film embodies the (faux) Hungarian style of central European classical music of the 19th century, which was in fact an exoticised rendering of aspects of the music of the Roma. The improvisation-like opening sounds like a “once upon a time” introducing a story, which goes through multiple shifts of mood from wistful reverie to fiery energy. A folk tune reflects the desolate plains, but the dance rhythms, double stops and mewing octaves lend a spark to the music that seems to radiate an ancient
magic.
