Einar Englund (1916-1999) composed Sonata for violin and piano in 1979. It was commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE and premiered by Okko Kamu, violin, and Eero Heinonen, piano, 5th May 1980 in Helsinki. The music of the sonata is summery, bright, and dance-like - only in the Elegia a tragedy can be heard. The sonata is dedicated to the composer's brother, who had died shortly before.

A pupil of Palmgren, the Finnish composer Einar Englund went on, after the composition of his first two symphonies, to further study with Aaron Copland. He was also influenced by Shostakovich and Prokofiev, while he himself claimed the influence of Stravinsky and Bartók.
