The third symphony is a cornerstone of Finnish orchestral writing and a seminal work in Usko Meriläinen's output. It opens with two motivic embryos which are submitted to the 'character metamorphosis' for which Meriläinen is well known. It took 2nd Prize in the competition organised to mark the inauguration of Finlandia Hall.
