Einojuhani Rautavaara's Symphony No. 4, Arabescata (1962), represents the most uncompromising modernist phase of his symphonic output. Drawing on the constructivism of the Central European avant-garde, the work explores total serialism in pitch, rhythm, dynamics and timbre, alongside graphic notation and aleatoric elements. Originally conceived as Arabescata, Rautavaara incorporated the work into his symphonic cycle in 1986, replacing his earlier Fourth Symphony. It remains the only totally serial Finnish symphony.
