A Requiem in Our Time (1953) was Einojuhani Rautavaara's international breakthrough. Dedicated to the memory of his mother, the work won the Thor Johnson Brass Composition Contest in the USA in 1954. Its success brought the young composer international recognition and contributed to Jean Sibelius selecting him for a scholarship to study in the United States, paving the way for Rautavaara's subsequent career.
