Meriläinen has established his own definition of the modern concerto in his works for soloist and orchestra and concerti for orchesrta. Like the earlier Letter to a Cellist, the Guitar Concerto investigates the dualism of virtuosity and contemplation. It received a rapturous reception when it was first performed by Timo Korhonen in 1991.
