Originally conceived as the composer's third symphony, the Fantasia was completed in 1923 after Merikanto's magnum opus, the opera Juha, and the tone poem Ekho. As with several other of Merikanto's works, it was destined to remain for many decades in the composer's desk-drawer, and was not performed until 1952.
