Lars Karlsson sävelsi "Joulupukin odotuslaulun" ja "Pienen tytön joululaulun" jo 1990-luvulla Paula Hiekkalan teksteihin. Sävelmät syntyivät alun perin pianosäestyksellisiksi lauluiksi, joista hän myöhemmin työsti kuoroversiot. Nuotissa on mukana sekä SSAA-kuoroversio, että melodialinja sointumerkkeineen. Laulut ovat tunnelmallisia säkeistömuotoisia lauluja; ne pureutuvat joulun odotukseen ja joulunajan mystiikkaan.
