The piece was written in 1972 in Japan and begun the series of "Nine Kwaidan Ballads" (1972-1977). The piece is based on the Japanese folk tale about a blind Biwa player who is visited by a ghost of dead samurai. This tale was published in Lafcadio Hearn's collection of Japanese folk tales "Kwaidan". The piece is dedicated to Izumi Tateno.
