From the collection Other Finnish works for violin - Works for violin and piano by Finnish women composers 1886-1936 (printed book available: 9790550117198).
Ida Moberg (1859–1947) was a composer, a conductor and a music educator. Her output includes a symphony, a violin concerto, an opera, tone poems, cantatas, choral works and chamber music. She initially trained as a singer and a piano teacher at the St Petersburg Conservatory but went on to train as a composer and a conductor at the Dresden Conservatory.
Moberg wrote the violin piece Marcia (1939) at the advanced age of 80 for her nephew's son Erik Moberg. Erik was ten years old at the time. The piece is one of four she wrote for him, collectively titled Fyra pedagogiska stycken [Four pedagogical pieces for violin]: ‘Eriks vaggsång' [Erik's lullaby], ‘Eriks vals' [Erik's waltz], ‘Marcia' and ‘Mobacka dansen' [Mobacka dance]. While this is clearly a pedagogical piece, it can also be seen as a truth seeker's determined progress towards spiritual transformation.
