Morgensang for mixed choir (2020) is an arrangement by Alex Freeman of a traditional melody from Verdal, Norway. The text associated with the melody is a Danish poem by Thomas Kingo (1634-1703). The composer tells: "The hyper-liturgical nature of this poetry seemed to me almost too far removed from my now-decades-old wordless concept of the melody. But the ending of the poem has an expansive, almost existential atmosphere to it that I found intriguing and which led me to a kind of plaintive, cyclic coda: glasset rinder, tiden går, og evigheden forestår (The hourglass runs, time passes, and eternity awaits)."
Morgensang was commissioned and premiered by the Kaamos Chamber Choir.
