Lotta Wennäkoski composed Signes (Signs) for cello and organ in 2025 for a special project in which Anssi Karttunen and Olivier Latry commissioned and premiered several duos in memory of Kaija Saariaho (1952–2023). Saariaho was her former teacher: Wennäkoski studied with her at the Sibelius Academy in the late 1990s, and we remained in touch thereafter.
Signes begins with one of Saariaho's favourite cello gestures: the low E-flat and its natural harmonic, the G two octaves above. More generally, the musical material of Signes has its roots in the final movement of Wennäkoski's Violin Concerto Prosoidia (2022–23), which she had already dedicated to Kaija.
