Einojuhani Rautavaara composed Sonata for cello solo in 1969 and dedicated it to Erkki Rautio, who also premiered the piece. Stylistically the sonata can be described as Neo-Baroque, J. S. Bach's solo cello suites as model. The second movement includes a quotation from Bach's fuga in d minor (BWV 565).
