In Einojuhani Rautavaara's works there is an undercurrent of Finnishness, folk-music and Finno-Ugrianism that runs through all his music. Examples of this are the 'homage' compositions to Bart6k, Kodály and Liszt – all for string orchestra – and A Finnish Myth from 1977 The composer tells: "A certain laconic impetuosity characterises this myth – a story which is told in music alone. A frantically forward- and up-ward-moving, piercing motif alternates with a broad, folk-song-like cantilena, while at the same time the surrounding sound-fields con-tinually expand. The work's various symme-tries and clusters are united by this mythical and mystical connection into a ‘root system', which seems to reach into the depths of pre-history, to ancient times and places, and yet still be present as a powerful influence on us all."
