Outi Tarkiainen's song cycle uses poems by Charles Baudelaire from the anthology Flowers of Evil and explores the solitude of a visionary individual and the inner necessity of forging one's own path, whether those visions are grandiose or nightmarish. While composing the first two songs of the cycle, the composer was living in London and therefore chose R. J. Dent's recent English translations of Baudelaire's poems for the lyrics.
